The Power of Mindfulness in Stress Reduction

The Power of Mindfulness in Stress Reduction

Are stress levels at work taking its toll on you, job satisfaction, relationships, finance and general well-being?

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing ones awareness on the present moment.

It allows you to calmly acknowledge & accept your feelings, thoughts, as well as appreciate your environment.

Towards the end of my studies where I achieved a Masters in Psychology, my dissertation was titled ‘Investigating whether Mindfulness is effective in improving concentration and attitude to learning in secondary school students’.

As a secondary school teacher, I wanted to find out ways to help my students beyond the conventional methods.

I discovered that mindfulness not only helps to improve students’ concentration as well as attitude to learning but general well-being!

Mindfulness has been proposed as a powerful and ubiquitous therapeutic tool, upon which all types of meditation and reflective practices are based on, to enhance concentration and improve inner well-being (Kabat-Zinn, 1990; 1994).

Mindfulness has also been found to be an effective intervention tool in improving students’ general well-being, attitudes, concentration levels and, overall, benefitting learning processes (Thich Nhat Hahn, 1999), since mindfulness may facilitate focused attention on specific areas and to pay more attention to the present moment.

This project set me up on a lifelong journey and I have since included the practice of mindfulness in my daily routine because the benefits are limitless!

I have since gone ahead to take some courses on Mindfulness and now help anyone who wants to let go of various limitations and negative emotions in their environment.

  • Improves problem solving capabilities
  • Increase creativity
  • Improves well-being and mental health
  • Reduces depression and anxiety
  • Enhances greater life satisfaction
  • Improves emotional intelligence
  • Reduces conflict

“The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Studies conducted by some Harvard Researchers showed the effectiveness of Mindfulness in the following ways:-

  • Improved mental state depression and anxiety;
  • Reduction of chronic pain;
  • MRI scan showed reduced fear in candidates;
  • Improved cognition, emotions and stress levels;
  • Increases positive emotions.

The effectiveness of mindfulness has been studied by medical and psycho-therapeutic applications and also through socially engaged practitioners.

To fully attain the best of the mindfulness practice, it requires one to fully ‘let go’ through the meditation process.

As a purpose coach and speaker, mindfulness is used with all my clients and has been very effective in helping them on lifes’ journey.

How To Transform Your Challenges Into Possibilities Without The Crippling Anxiety

How To Transform Your Challenges Into Possibilities Without The Crippling Anxiety

If you are a Marvel Comics superhero fan; then you must have seen Avengers Endgame by now; an American superhero film released in April last year.

  • Towards the end, one of the bad guys challenged the Avengers to their last fight.  The bad guys’ quest was to destroy everything in the universe, while the Avengers wanted to save the world and bring their loved ones who had died, back to life.
  • However, saving the world was dependent on who got the hand glove with the life saving stones first!  Whoever got the glove had to put it on and flick their fingers in order to get their hearts desires; ‘Destruction’ or ‘Restoration’.
  • Who do you think got the glove at the end?  Was the universe saved or completely destroyed?  Watch it to find out!
  • That movie got me thinking about life!  You have everything at your finger tips; you can either create a world where everything works for you or create a world where there is chaos.
  • How you may ask?
  • It all begins in your mind!  Your actions follow your thought patterns; whether you want life or chaos.  As you think, so you become.

  • What challenges are you facing today?  It is time to create the life you really want and transform those challenges into possibilities/opportunities by transforming your thoughts.
  • So, what type of world will you intentionally create from now on?  Will you get the result of the bad guys in ‘Endgame’ or will you get the result of ‘The Avengers’?  It all comes at a price but it is worth it!
  • What type of atmosphere are you creating in your personal life or at work?
